The Sand Island Lighthouse was built in 1881, guiding commercial and passenger ships to port. While many of the Apostle Islands were uninhabited in the 19th and 20th century, Sand Island had a population of over 100 fishermen and farmers, mostly of Norwegian descent. Griffith Island precinct offered us a great trail one going up to the end of the pier and another turning off somewhere halfway and extending to the light house. We did both the trails with real fun seeing interesting bird species on the way. Views of the ocean from the pier and lighthouse precinct were both attractive.
